Nidia Santiago / Mexico
What it is to be Hispanic and why my story is important to me.
Being Hispanic to me, means unconditional love, family, hard work, perseverance, food, music. I come from a huge Mexican family of immigrants from both sides of my family. I watched as my parents, aunts and uncles worked hard, some of the ladies took care of the families and also worked from home for extra income to help the husbands provide for the families. On Wednesdays my mom's side of the family would gather at my oldest aunts house to visit with my grandparents. On Saturdays everyone would gather at my grandmas house on my dad's side of the family as well. These gatherings were all centered on lots of food, music and love for each other. These family get together were very important to everyone and they all made it a priority to be there.
It is important to me to raise my kids to value importance of family and making time for them, working hard to achieve your dreams, being there for each other when someone is struggling, helping strangers in need and most importantly love each other. I can only hope that they will work just as hard or more than I have to get to where they want to be and that they would know that nothing is impossible. Lastly, that they would never take for granted what both of their sides of the family have done to get to where they are now. They will work just as hard or more than my husband and I have to get to where they want to be
